Woman Standing in a Window

new poem #1

Boston Poetry Magazine

by Steve Downes

You just don’t ask
but I wanted to ask

Whatever is the matter
your face is a symphony of sadness

young but sunken
pretty but dishevelled
feminine but harsh

why are you looking out
is it
too dark to see inside

why are you painted with tears
is there
something I should know

You just don’t ask
and I didn’t

She was just another woman
standing in a window
on a cold January day
